Causes of Painful Periods and Natural Relief

Period pain beyond mild cramping signals an underlying issue — explore the root causes of dysmenorrhea and natural ways to find lasting relief.

Period pain is so common that it has been normalized. Women are told to take ibuprofen, push through, and consider themselves lucky if it is "just cramps." But painful periods — medically called dysmenorrhea — affect an estimated 50–90% of menstruating women to some degree, and for many of them, the pain is genuinely debilitating: missing school or work, vomiting from the pain, unable to function for one to three days every cycle.

This is not a design flaw. It is a signal. And like all signals the body sends, it deserves to be understood rather than suppressed.

However, they treat the symptom, not the cause. Long-term daily NSAID use carries real risks including gut lining damage, leaky gut, kidney stress, and cardiovascular effects. Building a nutritional and lifestyle foundation that reduces prostaglandin production in the first place is the sustainable alternative.

When to See a Doctor

The following warrant prompt medical evaluation to rule out secondary causes:

  • Period pain that is progressively worsening over time
  • Pain beginning days before your period (not just at onset)
