I know what you might be thinking. Castor oil packs? Isn't that something your grandmother did? Yes — and your great-grandmother, the ancient Egyptians, Hippocrates himself, and pretty much every traditional healing culture that ever existed. This practice goes back thousands of years, and it's making a massive comeback because it genuinely works.
When I started doing castor oil packs years ago, I noticed real changes in my own cycle: less congestion, improved blood color, reduced cramping. And now, having worked with thousands of women through my programs, I hear similar stories all the time. So let's dig into what castor oil actually is, why it works, and exactly how to use it — because once you understand the mechanism, you'll understand why this is one of the first things I recommend to women dealing with period problems.
What Is Castor Oil — And Why Has It Been Used for So Long?
Castor oil is derived from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). It has been used medicinally by many cultures for centuries — the ancient Egyptians used it, Hippocrates wrote about it, and it's even referenced in the Bible. In Latin, castor oil was historically called Palma Christi, meaning "Palm of Christ," likely because of the distinctive shape of the plant's leaves — though I like to think it was also a nod to its near-miraculous healing properties.
Castor oil became widely used in Western medicine in the early 1900s, then fell out of favor as pharmaceutical medicine took over. Today, it's experiencing a well-deserved resurgence as more women are seeking effective, low-risk tools to support their hormonal health without automatically turning to medication.
Traditionally, castor oil was taken internally as a laxative and to induce labor — but I do not recommend doing either of these things unless you're under the guidance of a trained healthcare provider. What I do recommend, enthusiastically, is using it externally in the form of a castor oil pack. That's where the real magic happens for period health.
What's in Castor Oil That Makes It Work?
Castor oil's main active compound is ricinoleic acid, a rare fatty acid that makes up roughly 90% of its composition. Ricinoleic acid has well-documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. When applied to the skin, it penetrates deeply into the tissue — and that's when the real benefits begin.
But the benefits of castor oil go far beyond surface-level relief. Research has shown that it actively stimulates three of the body's most critical detoxification and circulation systems:
- The lymphatic system — your body's built-in waste removal highway
- The circulatory system — responsible for delivering fresh, oxygenated blood to your tissues and organs
- The liver — your primary detoxification organ and the hub for hormone processing
Let's look at each of these more closely, because understanding them is the key to understanding why castor oil packs work so well for period and hormonal issues.
Castor Oil and Your Lymphatic System
Think of your lymphatic system as your body's sewage system. It collects bacteria, viruses, cellular waste, parasites, and other "junk" from your tissues and transports it to the bloodstream for removal. The immune cells that travel this system — called lymphocytes — congregate in your lymph nodes to fight pathogens and neutralize toxins.
Here's the catch: unlike your cardiovascular system, your lymphatic system doesn't have a pump. It relies on body movement — exercise, deep breathing, muscle contractions — to keep the fluid moving. When it gets congested, all that waste builds up in the tissues, creating inflammation and contributing to conditions like pelvic congestion, bloating, and hormonal dysregulation.
One small but compelling study found that castor oil packs significantly increased the number of T-11 lymphocyte cells in participants after treatment. As the researchers noted: "The T-11 cell increase represents a general boost in the body's specific defense status. Lymphocytes actively defend the health of the body by forming antibodies against pathogens and their toxins. T-cell lymphocytes originate from bone marrow and the thymus gland as small lymphocytes that identify and kill viruses, fungi, bacteria, and cancer cells."
In other words, castor oil packs appear to actively boost immune function by stimulating lymphatic flow — without you having to do anything except lie down for an hour. That's remarkable.
Castor Oil and Blood Circulation
Once castor oil gets the lymphatic system moving, it also stimulates the circulatory system. This increased blood flow serves two purposes: it helps carry the waste being dumped by the lymphatic system out of the body, and it delivers a fresh supply of nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood to your organs — including your uterus and ovaries.
This is especially important for reproductive health. Many period problems — dark or brown blood, cramping, ovarian cysts, and even fertility challenges — are connected to poor circulation and pelvic congestion. When fresh, oxygenated blood reaches the reproductive organs regularly, it supports healing and proper function in a very fundamental way.
Castor Oil and Liver Detoxification
Your liver is the main detoxifying organ in your body. Among its many jobs, it breaks down and processes your hormones — including estrogen — so they can be safely eliminated. When your liver is sluggish or overloaded (very common in our modern world, with its toxic exposures and nutrient-depleted diets), hormones like estrogen can recirculate in the bloodstream instead of being cleared. This contributes to estrogen dominance and a long list of period problems.
Here's an interesting connection: the liver produces up to half of your body's lymph fluid. So when castor oil stimulates the lymphatic system, it simultaneously signals the liver to ramp up its own activity — preparing it to process the wave of toxins and spent hormones that are being cleared from the tissues. It's an elegant, self-reinforcing system.
In short: castor oil is a detoxifying, inflammation-fighting, circulation-boosting tool that works from the inside out. Using castor oil packs regularly allows your body to stop constantly "fighting fires" and start healing the underlying issues.
What Conditions Can Castor Oil Packs Help?
Based on both research and clinical experience, castor oil packs have been found helpful for a wide range of period and reproductive health issues:
Here's a closer look at the most common reasons women come to me asking about castor oil packs:
Endometriosis Pain
Castor oil packs are one of the most frequently recommended complementary tools for endometriosis. They won't treat the underlying condition or replace medical care, but the anti-inflammatory effects of ricinoleic acid combined with improved lymphatic drainage can provide meaningful relief from pelvic pain and cramping. Many women with endometriosis find that regular use — three to four days per week — makes a noticeable difference in day-to-day comfort.
Uterine Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts
By reducing pelvic congestion and improving circulation to the reproductive organs, castor oil packs may help shrink fibroids and ovarian cysts over time. This isn't an overnight fix — consistent use over several months is key. Women dealing with fibroids or ovarian cysts often combine castor oil packs with dietary changes and targeted supplements for the best results.
Scar Tissue
Whether you have scar tissue from a C-section, laparoscopic surgery, cervical procedures, or previous cysts, castor oil has a documented ability to soften adhesions. Improved tissue pliability means better function and less restriction in the reproductive organs — something that matters a great deal for fertility and pain levels.
Dark or Brown Period Blood
Brown or very dark blood at the start or end of your period is typically old blood that's not being efficiently cleared from the uterus. This is often a sign of sluggish circulation and pelvic congestion. By improving blood flow to the uterus, castor oil packs can help shift that old, stagnant blood to a brighter, healthier red — often within a few cycles of consistent use.
A small note here: I always recommend using castor oil packs as part of a broader approach to period health. They are genuinely powerful, but they work best alongside supportive diet changes, stress management, and addressing any underlying nutritional deficiencies. Think of them as a meaningful piece of the puzzle, not the whole solution.

Take the Free Assessment →How to Make and Use a Castor Oil Pack: Step-by-Step
Here's the complete protocol. I've used both methods below and they both work — it really comes down to convenience and personal preference.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
You have two options:
Option A — Pre-made kit (easiest): Purchase a Castor Oil Pack Kit from Queen of the Thrones. It contains everything you need and is by far the most convenient, least messy way to do this. They offer a Liver Kit, a Pelvic Kit, and a Thyroid Kit — I personally have the Liver Kit and use it over both my liver and my pelvic area.
Option B — Make your own: If you prefer the DIY route, you'll need:
- Cold-pressed organic castor oil in a glass bottle (look for hexane-free on the label — Heritage Store and Queen of the Thrones both make excellent options)
- A piece of wool or cotton flannel large enough to cover the treatment area when folded, or 2–3 one-foot square pieces stacked on top of each other
- A hot water bottle
- Plastic wrap or a silicone sheet to place between the oil-soaked flannel and the hot water bottle
- A hand towel or old cloth for clean-up (castor oil stains — use something expendable)
- A glass container with a lid for storing the pack between uses
Quality note: Try to buy organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil in a glass bottle. If you can't find all of those things, prioritize organic and glass — those matter most.
Step 2: Make Your Pack and Apply the Oil
First, decide where you're treating: your liver (right side of your abdomen, just below the right rib cage) or your reproductive organs (lower abdomen, below your belly button). I personally like to alternate — liver one session, lower abdomen the next.
If using a Queen of the Thrones kit: Rub 1–2 tablespoons of castor oil directly onto your skin over the target area. Or pour the same amount onto the cotton side of the pack.
If making your own: Fold the flannel so it covers the treatment area, or stack your square pieces. Rub 1–2 tablespoons of castor oil onto your skin, then place the flannel directly on top.
Optional essential oil upgrade: For liver sessions, add 2–3 drops of Doterra's Zendocrine essential oil to the castor oil in your palm before applying — it supports liver, gallbladder, and kidney detoxification. For pelvic sessions, add 2–3 drops of Clary Sage, which improves circulation, reduces cramping, and supports hormonal balance.
Step 3: Set Up and Get Comfortable
If using the Queen of the Thrones kit: Wrap the pack around your liver or lower abdomen and tie the strings in place with the cotton side against your skin. You can do almost anything while wearing it — it stays put.
If using a home-made pack: Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Place the flannel over the treatment area, then cover it with your silicone sheet or plastic wrap, and place the hot water bottle on top.
Step 4: Wear It and Relax
Queen of the Thrones pack: Wear for one hour, or wear it overnight for maximum benefit. You can also lie down with a hot water bottle on top if you prefer.
Home-made pack: Leave it on for 30–60 minutes.
Use this time to meditate, do deep breathing or a body scan, or simply watch a show. Some proponents say heat is essential; others say it's optional. I recommend using heat whenever you're already lying down — it deepens the circulation benefits and makes the whole thing more relaxing.
Step 5: Clean Up
Remove the pack and wipe away any residual oil with soap and water.
Queen of the Thrones pack: Roll it up and store in a cool, dry place.
Home-made pack: Discard the plastic wrap (or wash the silicone sheet with soap and water). Place the flannel in your glass container and store in the refrigerator or a cool, dry place.
Castor oil stains — keep a dedicated towel and wear clothes you don't mind getting oily.
Step 6: Reuse and Repeat
Consistency is everything with castor oil packs. Aim for 3–4 sessions per week for at least one month to see meaningful results. Daily use is fine too.
Both pre-made and home-made packs can be used up to 60 times before replacing. To extend the lifespan:
- Washing machine method: Wash on the hot cycle with ½ cup of baking soda and a small amount of detergent. Wash separately — castor oil stains. This typically adds another 30–60 uses.
- Soaking method: Fill a bowl with hot water, a few tablespoons of baking soda, and a squeeze of dish soap. Soak overnight, then hand wash with hot water and dish soap, rinse well, and hang to dry.
Store home-made packs between uses for up to six months.
Best Practices for Getting the Most Out of Your Castor Oil Packs
A few things will meaningfully improve your results:
- Be consistent. Three to four sessions per week for at least a month is the minimum to notice change. Those who use packs most regularly see the best results, full stop.
- Alternate between liver and pelvic placement. Supporting liver detoxification is critical for hormonal health — don't skip this just because you're focused on pelvic issues. Alternating gives you the full benefit of both.
- Use essential oils strategically. Zendocrine over the liver, Clary Sage over the lower abdomen. You don't need to use them every time — once or twice a week is enough to see the added benefit.
- Combine with a whole-body approach. Castor oil packs are powerful, but they're one tool. Pairing them with anti-inflammatory nutrition, stress reduction, and targeted supplements (see my Gentle Liver Detox Protocol for supplement support) will accelerate your progress considerably.
- Track your cycle changes. Keep a simple note of your symptoms — blood color, cramping intensity, bloating — before you start, and then each cycle. Many women are surprised by how quickly things shift.
Safety and Precautions
Castor oil packs are very safe when used correctly, but there are some important guidelines to follow:
- Do not use during your period. Castor oil packs increase circulation and can intensify bleeding. Save them for the days between your period and ovulation.
- Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- If you're trying to conceive: Only use packs from the day after your period ends until the day before ovulation. Do not use after ovulation — you may not yet know if you've conceived.
- If you experience moderate to severe cramping or diarrhea after using packs, cut both frequency and duration in half. If side effects continue, stop using them and consult your healthcare provider.
- If you develop a rash or skin irritation, discontinue use immediately and see a healthcare provider.
- When in doubt, ask. If you have any concerns about whether castor oil packs are appropriate for your situation, check with your healthcare provider first.
Castor Oil for More Than Just Periods
One more thing worth mentioning: the benefits of castor oil aren't limited to reproductive health. Applied topically to the scalp, it has been shown to support hair regrowth. Used over the thyroid area, it may support thyroid function. It's also been used effectively for thyroid health, joint pain, and digestive issues. Queen of the Thrones even makes a dedicated Thyroid Kit for this purpose.
And if you want to go deep on the research, I highly recommend the book The Oil That Heals by William McGarey, a physician who spent decades using castor oil to successfully treat conditions ranging from arthritis to digestive disorders to liver and gallbladder problems. It's a fascinating read that will give you an even deeper appreciation for this humble oil.
I've found castor oil packs to be genuinely transformative — for my own cycle and for countless women I've worked with. They're inexpensive, easy to do at home, and remarkably effective when used consistently. Give them a real try — three to four times a week for four to six weeks — and I think you'll be a convert too.
